Joining the Cartographers' Guild

Over the last few months I found this really interesting website called the Cartographers' Guild, a large community forum where people go to share their fantasy map projects and post interesting tips on how to improve their fantasy map drawing skills.

What particularly interested me on this site was a post from one of the community members there on the forum about the "Eriond" fantasy map project that they were working on, which featured a tutorial on how to create photorealistic fantasy maps in the GIMP program. This would prove to be of big use for the Youtubia fantasy map project that I am currently working on.

At an important time where I am currently working on my business idea, I believe that it is important for me to be part of a place where I can share my ideas and be able to build business relationships with other like-minded people in the fantasy world.

Therefore, I have decided to join the Cartographers' Guild forum and I hope to be able to post my fantasy map projects there as well as on this blog. Conversely, members of the Guild can now explore my blog and can keep an eye out on things in this space.

Up and away we go,

Jakub

Run-up to the end of 2025 - Secret Maps at the British Library

It's been quite dead on my blog since the last post on the tales of creative writing, and that's because I have been busy in London's big library - so to celebrate the end of the 2025, let's explore the Secret Maps exhibition together and bring the mysteries of mapping alive... The Secret Maps Exhibition So, as is usual in blogposts about events, let's talk about what this exhibition is all about. So, Secret Maps is an exhibition that explores mapping and the theme of secrecy and privacy, ranging from 14th century ideas to the present day, taking place at the British Library from the 24th of October 2025 to the 18th of January 2026.  The map curators at the Library had a very tough task over the previous three years in preparing the exhibition for display; choosing the right themes for the exhibition and having to meticulously pick out 100 of the most relevant items from the Library's extensive map collection (4.3 million maps to be precise), along with contacti...

Post-Bootcamp Adventures - The Second Summer Bootcamp Grand Finale

It's back, and it's more wilder than ever... yes, that's right - it's time to present to you the Make a Difference Bootcamp Grand Finale post from June 2024! As you may or may not know, the Make a Difference Start-up Bootcamp is a series of sessions revolving around social enterprise start-ups that are run by a talented Enterprise Team at the University of Suffolk, and consisted of eight sessions focusing on ideation, marketing and financial planning, starting on the 18th of June, and culminating with this session on the 18th of July, where eight Bootcampers competed for the chance to win a share of £2,000 of the prize money. Without further ado... let's get to the event itself! Grand Finale event The morning of the Grand Finale was mostly uneventful - I went back to the Hold to finish off the rest of Young's book, before deciding to go and have some packed lunch, with which my choices were much less interesting than the lunch that I had before going to last yea...

Post-Bootcamp Adventures - DiscoveReads Book Festival

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another blogpost from me! With the world of books and creative writing being closely related to the theme of fantasy worlds, I decided that it would be a great idea for me to share with you my fairly action-packed experience of the DiscoveReads book festival.  What is the DiscoveReads book festival? DiscoveReads is an annual book festival that is run by Suffolk Libraries on the bank holiday weekend in May every year. The 2025 festival hosted talks with six famous authors on a wide range of themes, from fictional novels to real-life political issues, as well as creative writing workshops. In addition to the main event being hosted in the Hold, displays featuring each of the books in the main event also appeared in six different libraries around Suffolk, for those who are unable to make it to Ipswich for the main event.  Tickets to attend events at the festival went up for sale on the 17th of April, with early bird sales running up until the 1...
